Overview

Concept Statement: Play as a freak who morphs into different monstrosities every level and relive the horror and terror of Flappy Bird in this re-imagining of the decade old hit classic in new forms of art and difficulty.

Genre:

Arcade

Platformer

Single-Player

Arcade most suits this game as the game play is reaction based and what is intended as an endless runner game but for this project, is a level based game because the procedural level generation system is too complicated for the time I have. I also have the game listed as a platformer and single player game because they do describe the game play.

Concept Creation Process/Area and Influences:

The main influence is the main design of the game as it is a reimagining of the lost IOS/Android game "Flappy Bird". But I intend on making the game different by changing either the art style or changing the gimmick found within each level so that it can be visually difficult and fundamentally difficult. This type of game style can be found in some mobile puzzle games similar to ‘Flow Free’ as in the game, the main game play is connecting a colour dot to its respective coloured dot by drawing a line, but over time the app has had many different game styles that are very different to the base game which allows users to not get bored of the game. I plan on using this style of game for my own game but instead of game play, I want to change the art style so that the player will not get bored of the game too quickly. For example, the first level will have the same design as the original to get players adjusted to the gameplay while the second level would be line art and potentially have different angled obstacles to trick the player out.

Audience/Competitive Analysis:

This game is intended to be played for only a few minutes a day or when you are waiting for something/someone which allows the audience to be everyone with smartphone access which can be men, women, children, and people from other cultures, but it might be difficult for those that have disabilities affecting reaction times or hand movement but other than that, the game is very casual friendly. The competitive scene for this style of game was wild after the creator of flappy bird took down the game and many other people made clones of flappy bird, but this has slowly decreased over time until it was rare to see this style of game be popular, so there is a very low amount of competitors to face, which is why I believe this game would be successful.

Game Treatment:

You are an entity called a freak who has the ability to morph into other beings that all share the ability to ‘flap’. You were created by a group of scientists within the organisation called the ‘Giant Margarita’ and your sole purpose is to become a weapon of mass destruction and eradicate humanity. But while in the development stage, one of the scientists had come to realise that the mission was completely different to what was told to them, so they changed the code of the freak so that the freak had some humanity in him. After the creation of you, you realised what the cooperation’s goal was and now are escaping from them to live a normal life. While escaping, you figure out your abilities given by the scientist and start using them to full potential, morphing into a bird and flew away. But there are restrictions placed upon your ability to fly by limiting it to a ‘flap’ and after a few minutes, your morph ability becomes automatic and transform you after a few minutes of ‘flapping’. Your goal is escaping the guards released by the cooperation and settle down. The morphing abilities at the start are limited to a bird but over time while escaping, your intellect becomes more advanced and are able to transform into other creatures that come into thought, but you have not mastered the ability to do this at will, so you transform into someone or something random.

The initial plan is to have at most, 10 levels that have majorly different art styles between each other and have different sprites for the player character that match the art style of the current level. Each level has a certain number of obstacles to pass through in order to complete the level with each level getting increasingly more difficult with the number of obstacles increasing by a medium amount each time.

Features:

  • A Variety of Art Styles
  • Simple Controls:
    • Space Bar to Jump
  • There is somewhat of a story
  • Easy level navigation through level select
  •

Concept Art:

These concept art are to show that the level design and art style will be different between each other as well as the player character changing between each level and to show what the general game play will be by showing the character and the level as well. I have also developed the app icon of the game that shows a more humanoid head with the facial features of the flappy bird. I have a simple design for the goal line for this game as the original game didn’t have a finish goal and I do not have any good ideas for the design currently.
